When we first drafted the outline for our book, we titled it Hacking Trauma-Responsive Practices. It was bold. Practical. A nod to the popular “Hack Learning” series and a way to signal immediate solutions for overwhelmed educators navigating the impacts of trauma in schools.

But over time, the word “hacking” didn’t fit with our purpose. We weren’t offering shortcuts or clever workarounds. We were offering strategies. Stories. Shifts that honored the depth and complexity of trauma.

More than anything, “hacking” felt like it missed the heart of our work. Our book is about transformation, not just technique. It’s about what happens when teachers meet breakdowns with insight, not punishment. When a child’s spiral becomes a signal, not a disruption. When educators move from scripted responses to authentic connection.

So, we renamed it: From Breakdowns to Breakthroughs: 10 Simple Strategies to Reduce Disruptions and Create Trauma-Responsive Classrooms.

This new title recognizes the moments that feel impossible, as well as those that follow when breakthroughs happen through presence rather than perfection.

And the best part? The title speaks to every level of experience. Whether you’re a new teacher trying not to freeze during your first dysregulated moment or a veteran educator reimagining your practice, From Breakdowns to Breakthroughs gives permission. Permission to feel, to fumble, to learn, and to grow.

This book isn’t a “hack.” It’s a companion for the long haul. It holds space for small steps, quiet breakthroughs, and the daily choice to connect. From Breakdowns to Breakthroughs is more than a title; it’s an invitation. One we hope you’ll accept.
